UA and pinch point temperature difference modeling — Finding the best heat exchanger schemes

Process models using simplified heat exchanger (HE) are often analyzed methods based on derivatives or optimization procedures, where even small numerical errors can cause algorithms to fail. This article explores the use of approximations for calculating pinch temperature and UA-value, including novel high-order polynomial equidistant Chebyshev grids. The results show that mainstream methods, LMTD calculated from grid values, 2–5 times slower than if requiring accuracy better 1%. If a 0.01% is needed 10–20 faster. Numerical in schemes with pure fluids converge quickly zero when increasing size, more 30 points generate less 1E-4%. High-order were successful fluid mixtures, hybrid high low-order scheme recommended.
